Garage Door Section Replacement
Replacing One Panel Instead of the Whole Door
A sectional garage door is four or five horizontal panels hinged together. When one is damaged, the other three or four are usually fine. That is the entire case for section replacement, and it is the repair that saves Long Beach homeowners the most money.
When a Section Swap Works
The model is still in production. This is the deciding factor. Manufacturers change section profiles, and a panel from a different line will not line up, will not match the stamped pattern, and will look wrong on the elevation.
The damage is confined. One dented panel from a reversing car, or one rusted bottom section, with the rest of the body straight.
The track and hardware are sound. If the impact bent the track as well, that gets straightened or replaced in the same visit.
The Bottom Section Case
This is the common one here. Water sits along the bottom rail after rain or a wash. Salt in the air stays behind as it dries and works into the seam, corroding the steel from the inside out. By the time paint blisters, the metal underneath is usually gone.
It looks terminal and it usually is not. The rest of the door has been dry the whole time. If the model is current, one section comes off and a new one goes on.
The bottom section is also the one carrying the bottom brackets, which the lift cables attach to. Those brackets are under spring tension. This is not a panel to attempt yourself.
When It Does Not Work
If the model is discontinued and nothing matches, you are choosing between a visibly mismatched panel on the front of your house or a full replacement. On a door facing the street most people replace. On an alley-facing garage plenty of people happily live with a mismatch, and we will fit one if that is your call.
What the Job Involves
- Identify the model and order the matching section, which takes a few days.
- On the day, release the spring tension safely before anything is unbolted.
- Remove the damaged section, transferring hinges, rollers, and any brackets.
- Fit the new section, square the door, and re-tension.
- Balance test with the opener disconnected, then both safety reversals.
The Cost Comparison
A section replacement typically runs a third to a quarter of a full door. Where a door is otherwise sound, that is straightforwardly the better spend, and it buys the same years the full door would have.
