Garage Door Assessment

Finding Out What You Actually Have

Most people call about a symptom. The door will not lift, or it is noisy, or a panel is dented. The useful question underneath is whether the door as a whole has life left in it, because that decides whether you are spending two hundred dollars or three thousand.

Againsthillary assesses doors across Long Beach and puts the answer in writing.

What We Check

The model. Read from the section profile, the hardware, and any manufacturer stamp inside a panel. This is the single most important fact about your door, because a current model means a damaged section can be matched and swapped, and a discontinued one means it cannot.

The body. Every section, both faces. We are looking for rust starting in the bottom seam, dents that have creased rather than dished, and any panel that has bowed enough to bind in the track.

The track and hardware. Straightness, alignment, mounting, and whether the rollers are sealed and turning or dry and dragging. Bent track is often straightened rather than replaced.

The springs. Type, wire size, and an estimate of remaining cycle life against the age of the door and how often it runs.

The cables. Particularly where they wind onto the drums. Near the water these corrode inside the strand and look fine until they part.

The safety systems. Photo eye height and alignment, beam-break reversal, and contact reversal on a two by four.

What You Get

A written note naming the model, the condition of each of the above, and then a repair price. If one of the three replacement triggers applies, you get the replacement price too, along with which trigger and why.

The three triggers, for reference: the body is compromised, the model is discontinued so sections cannot be matched, or the design is unsafe. Nothing else moves a door into the replace column.

What It Is Not

It is not a sales visit with a survey attached. If the answer is that you have a sound door with a dead spring, we will say so, quote the spring, and leave. We would rather do the two hundred dollar job and be the number you call in three years.
